Well I thought I had it figured out-
cavilier=Z24=2 doors 4 cylinders
Lumina=Z26=2 doors 6 cylinders
Camero=Z28=2 doors 8 cylinders
but there is the Z06 and Z71 and Z66
So where do they get the rest of the numbers??
Darn chebbie folks, always confusing us rationally thinking people!
Z71, Z06, and Z66 are the order codes for those particular performance packages/options. Beyond that I don't know what significance they hold beyond that, if any.
Z used to be for Zora Arkus Duntov, the man behind development of Chevy's first performance engine, 283ci in the '57 Corvette and passenger cars, and later the 350 and other performance efforts.
Z06 = Cheby's new idea NO doors and 6 cylinder.
-If it sits there like a rock people don't need to get in do they...
Z71 = 7 access doors and a 1 cylinder engine.
1 acces panel for the engine (hood),
2 side doors,
1 tailgate,
2 floor access points for the pedals or "Flintstone power module",
1 roof egress point for when it is buried in mud.
Z66 = Short for Z666 and we all know what 666 means...
Actually I've heard the Z28 was the engineering development code that GM used for that sports car project. They were going to call it the 'cheeta' but somehow decided z28 sounded cooler. In the end, on a Ford truck site, who really cares?
