Yes this is part of my problem I was going to try avoiding tailpipes because of the complexity ( can be done but more chance of issues ) but it definitely affects muffler choices .
At first I thought I was just going to have the exhaust exhaust right under the truck like it was before I redid everything. but then I saw how dirty the underside was from this. So I decided to have it exit out the side. That's when I saw a few other designs like what I came up with.
The stainless is 304ss so I'm using 308L filler rod with a stubby gas nozzle and back filling.
I used Maremount Cherry Bomb mufflers that I have used on other builds but not Ford Flathead. The Ford sound comes through very well but I think they are a bit harsh and will probably change to Borla. The truck has no tailpipes installed on this video.
It's tight and needs a lot of bends so I'm trying real hard not to have to . I guess what it's going to come to in my case is a loss of some of the way I would like it to sound outside in favor of a reasonable cab level for sanity .
I was really hoping rimrock would chime back in as his is very close to the note I'm after but I would like to know which mufflers and if he used a crossover and tailpipes as this would affect the sound a fair bit I believe .
I am running a Jaguar IRS - soft mounted like the donor Jag. The donor had pipes that went through the cage but they were small (1 7/8 in pipe). I have a 20 gal fuel tank mounted in the rear frame rails, so didn't want to try to get 2.5 in exhaust pipe through the cage to the rear of the truck. So, I dumped them out the side before the tires. Hope I don't regret my decision.
Thanks
Dan
Yes your looks even busier than the vette so my plan is the same but I am not using a rear fuel tank so tailpipes are not impossible just something I'd like to avoid .
GICK those do sound nice to me but without tail pipes I think it would be brutal . AZAV8 and outlaw did you go with the magna flows because of personal experience or hearing them on others ? Outlaw x pipe for the horsepower or the sound and do you feel the paint on your boards will take the heat ?
EBEAR,
I went with MagnaFlow because they had a complete kit that was made for my 48 F1, the exhaust pipe size matched the size of my headers, and I was able to get a discount on the Summit Racing price through the shop I've used, Industrial Chassis. I figured I would have all of the pieces I needed for a complete system, and the inevitable changes that I'd have to make would require just small parts. It was also the same 409 stainless material that is the same as the exit pipes of my Ford Racing headers.
Well guy's after doing a little research ( hadn't previously occurred to me ) on crossover pipes I have found some of the my answers . Turns out X and H pipes are not created equal . Both are close in horsepower gain X more in higher rpm H lower end torque but the biggest difference is in sound . With an X pipe the sound is blended and will sound more " sport's car " an H on the other hand equalizes the exhaust pressure without blending the sound leaving a more old school muscle car sound .

I am a normally unsatisfied customer with exhaust sound. On the fourth set of mufflers on my 40 coupe, and still looking for the right ones. However I lucked out on my 53F100 with a stock 302 HO. I installed Flowtech Afterburner mufflers from the start and they are perfect for me. Mellow until you get on it, then they are not irritating. They will be the next ones on my 40 although it will require some new pipes. I did route the tailpipes to the rear going over the Tbird IRS when I installed it.
