Moe, if you can fit them tail pipes make a BIG difference, I have flowmaster 40s on my 47 Cadillac and they sound great, reasonable around town and loud when you stomp on it. That is with a full dual system, no crossover, and tail pipes. Putting the noise straight out the very back helps a lot.
I cheeped out and got the quietest thrush mufflers they offer. They sound really good at certain rpm and then a lot of drone noise at others. Does sound good stepping on it though. And for reference I have full length duel pipes out of a 302 with a fairly mild cam. no H or X pipe. If I could do it all over again I would definitely spend more on better engineered mufflers like from flow master or the like.
Is there much of a difference in sound when an H pipe is added ? I was not going to as I am not looking for the more blended roar that I believe the H pipe makes , more of an individual cyl sound , or am I wrong on this ?
As far as an H pipe like anything it's personal preference. I have an H pipe on my 70 Chevelle with Flowmaster mufflers and I prefer no H pipe. I only have it because it came with the exhaust kit. I do not like the change in sound.
As I mentioned my feeling is that crossovers give more of a ( Ferrari ) multi cyl howl sound . Has anyone tried the Varex ( would have to win the lottery ) or BBK vari tune mufflers ?

When I first installed the Hushpower glass packs on my 56 312 I had no H pipe. They sounded pretty good but had a real bark to them. Engine had an occasional stumble then and when it did (usually leaving a show) they sounded awful. I added a H pipe and they mellowed out and sounded much better to me and about 6 friends I asked. Later fixed the stumble and love the sound they make.
Thanks for your replies guys I'm gonna bump this in the hopes that some of our far southern members could do some sound clips - 34 f here today so I doubt anyone near me will be firing up any time soon .

Keep in mind different engines will make different sounds with the same muffler. Also depends what RPM you will be cruising at at well.
I am planning on spintech mufflers. I spent a lot of time on youtube comparing different muffler sounds and the spintechs sound the best to me. From the reviews I have read, they dont drone very much.
I bought this system from MagnaFlow as it was a complete stainless steel system including mufflers, pipes, x-pipe, and clamps. It is 2.5 inch diameter, the same size as my headers. It is designed to fit the 48 F1.
When I built my exhaust I used the SS pre bent pipes from Silicone Intakes. Great prices and great customer service as well as good product.
This was far cheaper than buying a kit and hoping it had all the pieces I would need.
I also used V clamps on either side of the mufflers to make for easy changes if needed. Figured if I hate the exhaust note I can more easily put in different mufflers.
For my X pipe kit I used the Pypes X pipe kit. Again great kit at a great price. I was skeptical of what the quality would be on such a low dollar. But am very happy with it.
Here a few pics of the roughed in exhaust. Finish welding will not be for a few more weeks.
GICK those do sound nice to me but without tail pipes I think it would be brutal . AZAV8 and outlaw did you go with the magna flows because of personal experience or hearing them on others ? Outlaw x pipe for the horsepower or the sound and do you feel the paint on your boards will take the heat ?
I went with magna flow from reviews and videos. I wanted a quieter note.
The x pipe I went with because from what I read and researched the performance and note was more in line with what I wanted.
My my good friend is an auto painter. He helped me design the exit to make sure the pair does not bubble. Also the tips are double wall to help reduce heat. And if they do bubble I can easily redesign and paint again.
