6.9 won't start

no problem. we were all new to these at one time or another.
i am not that "UP" on the 83 to 86 systems as i am on the 87 to 94 trucks.
a classic sign of air intrusion is the engine firing and running for 1-2 seconds then shutting off and cranking forever to refire.
air intrusion is when air gets into the fuel system and allows the fuel filter to drain back to the tank when sitting, so when you go to start it the fuel filter is empty and the engine will only run for a second or two on the fuel in the injector pump. then it dies until the fuel pump can refill the syatem.

ok, that tells me the glow plug system is dead.
i would pull a glow plug and see what brand it is. your truck takes the motorcraft beru ZD-1 plug. you can get them from rock auto for $9.33 each

Will do. I was planning on doing a tune up kit. New plugs injectors return line etc
