Okay I'm having trouble starting my 6.9 idi as well. It has 2 new batteries and a new starter. If it hasn't ran in a few hours or longer it just cranks as fast as it can but nothing will fire. A small squirt of ether is my go to and the only way to start it right now. I have been told it's a fuel problem and some say that it is a heat problem. Any thoughts on this ???????
Sounds like a GP issue if it runs after a shot of ether. How long is the WTS light on? As TJC said, use a meter to check that you're getting power to the GPs, and then Ohm the GPs to see if any are still good.

Will plugging in the block heater work until I get new gp if that is the problem??
5 -6 seconds WTS light sounds like your glow plug circuit is not working properly,
with engine cold, remove a connector from one of the glow plugs and pput a volt meter to the connector then have a helper turn the key to run position and see if the glow plugs are getting power.
if the block heater is working, the engine should start after being plugged in for 3 hours unless it is extremely cold out. .

Last night I checked glow plugs and they were apparently wired backwards. I fixed that problem and it still didn't work. The truck has a history of getting air spots in fuel lines. So I think that might be the problem
if it still has the water separator on the firewall, that is normal point of air intrusion on the older trucks and is usually bypassed to get rid of the air intrusion point.

Okay I'll check it. This is my first diesel truck. After I graduate I'm planning on doing diesel mechanics as a career and I just love the trucks. I'm just trying to figure the truck out right now I really appreciate the help
no problem. we were all new to these at one time or another.
i am not that "UP" on the 83 to 86 systems as i am on the 87 to 94 trucks.
a classic sign of air intrusion is the engine firing and running for 1-2 seconds then shutting off and cranking forever to refire.
air intrusion is when air gets into the fuel system and allows the fuel filter to drain back to the tank when sitting, so when you go to start it the fuel filter is empty and the engine will only run for a second or two on the fuel in the injector pump. then it dies until the fuel pump can refill the syatem.
