Hey everybody. I have a 1994 f150 4x4 with aftermarket manual lockers the are warns lockers. And when I lock my hubs in and only my hubs it makeseems a terrible grinding noise like metal on metal. Is this a bad universal joint or what?
You need to do a little to narrow it down. The first thing I'd do is take the front driveshaft out. It's not hard to do and if it still makes the noise afterward you know it's not the driveshaft or transfer case.
Assuming that it does still make noise after the driveshaft it out it could be a number of things. The list that comes to my mind is:
U-joints. Doesn't seem like the most likely candidate to me. I've had U-joints go out a few times and I've never heard a terrible grinding noise.
Inner spindle bearing. There's a bearing inside the spindle that supports the outer axle shaft. Also doesn't seem real likely. I've never had one go bad, but I don't think it would make a terrible grinding sound either
Front diff. Unfortunately this seems like the most likely candidate to me. They don't commonly go bad, but it does seem like the kind of thing that could make the noise you describe.
That's a starting point. As I said, narrow it down as much as you can before panicing or throwing a lot of money at it.
