There is no button or switch, it's completely automatic.
The 4WD system operates in FWD mode unless the computer detects the necessary conditions, then it automatically engages the rear drive electrically.
That was the way I thought it worked,,just wanted to make sure. Got 5inches of snow here and need to get out. Will just take it easy going downhill and see what happens.
Ford's Unintelligent 4WD System engages the rear end from a dead no matter what the road condition is. It stays engaged and slowly drops the amount to zero when you reach a cruising speed.
You probably need to address that needless sarcasm to the OP, he (probably) has an owners manual for his car, not me.
Given the available resources, including the inclusion of a link in my signature to get the available manuals whether one owns the vehicle or not, leaves no excuse for not looking in the owner's manual.
Actually the OP asked if it's "On Demand" and actually it isn't! It engages from a dead stop no matter what the road condition is so it isn't.
Even the Ford Workshop Manuals don't explain how most things work. Just look how the size of the manuals has decreased over the years. I've asked my dealer questions that they couldn't answer and the Ford Hotline just said that the info wasn't availible.

I ran into that with my adaptive transmission question(s) and in reference to the proper compass zone setting I should be using. The dealer had done a "full diagnostics" on the vehicle and it returned no codes or warnings so they said the only thing they might be able to do is reset the transmission and have it relearn.
As far as the compass is goes, nobody seems to have access to Ford's latest map. My location is smack dab in the middle of two zones or in either one depending on the map you reference. Bigger picture is that I don't have the onboard NAV system so it only affects the compass reading on the dashboard - not a huge deal if it's a few degrees off.
