I had the big bang on a 57 chevy I used to drive. Going down the interstate, it felt like I ran over something, but nothing was in the road. After that, I noticed a little whine in the rearend. Got home and noticed oil all over the trunk lid, looked under and there was a hole in the front casting of the pumpkin. A tooth had broke off and shot right through the casting. Those old chevy rearends were setup just like the Ford 9 inch. I just had to pull the axles, pull the pumpkin out the front and replace it.

I had it towed and swapped the axle out. Thanks for the help and time.whenever you guys have a problem hopefully I can help.

So that's the front axle, just like I predicted?

Rear axle. I checked everything on the front axle, everything is working good.

So what was the cause for the pinion to run into the ring gear bad bearing or loose pinion nut?
