Hey fellas, i thought i would post this here as you fellow wheelers seem to know your *****
Anyways i replace my inner and outer wheel bearings on both sides so i pulled the hubs out obviously. I had them both pulled out at the same time, so when it came time to put the hubs in i started on the driver side. When i was done that side the hub was already in the "free" position. I turned the tire and the front driveshaft did not move.
Now i did the same thing to the passenger side but when i was done i turned the tire and the front driveshaft now turns. Is it supposed to do this? I thought it wouldnt turn unless both hubs are in the "locked" position.
jack up a front wheel and turn the tire with hub in free, the axle should not turn . if hub in lock ,the axle will turn with wheel. this is proper. if it does not turn in lock position, something is wrong with the hub.
Both tires are jacked up off the ground. I did the bearings on the driver side first. When done that side i spun the tire and the axle did not turn (it was in free)
Did the passenger side but when in "free" the axle still turns.
The only thing im not sure of; is there is a round gear thing in the hub with the spline count on the inside, this splines are only cut into the gear about 3/4 way through. Maybee i installed it backwards???
i put the spline in wrong on my D44's once and it just woulnd't lock. It would run free all the time until i turned it around. I dont exactly remember off the top of my head which way it was supposed to go but i think the groves that go about 3/4 the way through are supposed to be on the inside. I think you have something stuck in there if its turning when its in free mode. might needa take it apart and free it up, only takes about 5 minutes to pull them out and look at em.
yea i havnt had time to rip it apart again cause im working nights. I do know for a fact though that i have that gear thing, the opposite way that you mentioned. I will try the other way.
P.S. Do you guys add a little grease to these parts too? I did a little but not too much it would stick.
