Waiting on an engine as of yesterday. This one's clearly a manufacturing issue of some flavor.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sure would love to see Ford's historical data that shows a percentage of failures per engine. Since the ecoboost has out sold the 5L by a 2 to 1 average since 2011....................

I bought a brand new 2014 F-150 5.0 in December of 2014. Had 20 miles on the odometer. At around 18k I told my service advisor of a tapping noise near the drivers side of the motor. Long story short needed a new short block. They claimed three pistons were bad.

That's sad, but looking in these new car dealerships, it isn't uncommon for a new vehicle to be in need of work. Just not right though.

I was just checking out a couple other forums and thought this was interesting. Here's a similar thread in a Ram EcoDiesel forum:

POLL Catastrophic Failures

Looks like nothing under the hood of an F150 has anything on those things.

Vert interesting find Tom. While I most definitely would never want anyone from any truck brand to suffer such catastrophes, it would be interesting to see a percentage of failed ecodiesels. I'm sure that these figures exist and I'm doubly certain that they are buried very deep in corporate files somewhere.

Yep, I'd completely agree with that. You never want to see anyone go through issues like that, regardless of what they drive. I just think it's an interesting contrast with the opinions of a few vocal EcoBoost antagonists who continually insist that they are failing left and right. The EcoDiesel has sold in MUCH smaller volume and, based on anecdotal evidence, seems to be significantly more likely to blow up. I think it's a shame, I like the EcoDiesel and really want it to succeed. We'll see what happens if it returns to the Ram 1500 after this latest redesign.

Also a fair statement Tom. In my view, small diesels have never been very popular in the US mainly because of reliability issues. Remember the old GM diesel of the late 70's or rather a reworked 350 V8 and many others that have followed.

I certainly hope Ford isn't bringing something to market just to compete. Let it be a well designed reliable engine that will help change consumers perceptions of diesel ownership.
