2011+ Engine Failure Thread

Hi everyone. All of the engines were new for 2011, and there's been more than a bit of controversy ever since they were released. I was thinking about this last night, and I'd like to gather some information and conduct an informal survey based on engine failures.

Rules:

1. Post up any threads, photos, or details of first-hand experience of any engine failure of a 2011-present F150. Examples can come from any forum or source that you like, but must be credible.

2. Engines, to the best of your knowledge, should be stock or somewhat close to it(i.e. air intake, exhaust, and so forth). Highly modified engines need not apply.

3. Engine failures ONLY. Meaning a replacement long block, short block, or complete engine. Intercooler issues, coolant leaks, timing chains, and everything else need not apply.

3. I will edit this post to maintain a tally of failures, and hopefully we can all can have fun and become a bit better informed. This is in no way intended to resemble any kind of scientific survey, but it would give everyone a bit better perspective on things.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Results - Updated 02/03/2017

3.5L EcoBoost - 9

5.0L Coyote - 15

6.2L Boss - 0

3.7L - 0

Here'an EcoBoost failure:

The first time my Eco blew up...... - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans

This thing blew up on him three times before he traded. He insists that it was bone stock, and the root cause was clearly never diagnosed.

I had a 2011 with a 5.0 that failed at 600 miles with a broken crankshaft. Ford replaced the engine and I continued to have numerous problems with the truck. Eventually, Ford bought the truck back and I got a new 2012 with a 5.0 that never gave me one problem the entire time I had it.

Here are a few blown EcoBoost examples:

2013 with 28,500 miles:
blown engine

75,000 miles. Note the post responding to the mod question was redacted, so unknown mods. Might have been trying to preserve his warranty coverage.

Looks like the OP is making a "fair" attempt to illustrate issues from both the EB and the V8.

Thanks, Tim. I'll be honest...I have no skin in this game. My truck is under warranty, and I'd consider a warranty engine replacement a good thing rather than bad. I hope to learn something with this thread...perhaps I'll learn enough to buy an extended warranty?

At this point I haven't found enough failures to become concerned, and the same would be true if I had a 5.0L truck. I'm hoping some other folks can find what I can't and make this interesting. Where are @WXboy and @93Cobra? I'm sure they'd be happy to find all the EcoBoost failures that I'm missing.

2012 5.0L with 79K miles. Search his username and you can see where he posts about the new short block. This was the most informative post I came across of his...he traded for an EcoBoost shortly after the engine work.
Add me to the list of replaced 5.0's - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans

I think that's a silly thing to do...a fresh engine at 79K miles is awesome when you're not the one paying for it! I'd have kept that thing for awhile...

Here's another 2012 5.0L with 37K from that same thread:

This is an old article but still on point to Tom's discussion. As of late 2014 when the 2015' were about to arrive, Ford was projecting a sales breakdown of 28% 5L, 28% of the 2.7L and 28% of the 3.5L ecoboost leaving about 15% for the 3.5L N/A.

As of June 2016 Ford had sold it's 1,000,000th ecoboost F-150. There are plenty of 3.5L EB's out there in other Taurus based platforms.

The point here that Tom has posted a pretty equal number of failures but when considering the sheer volume of GTDI engines sold in the F-150, it seems that the 3.5L EB may have a pretty low failure rate after all.

For the life of me I can't source any info that breaks down F-150 sales by engine. I know Ford has it but this info is apparently not available for public viewing.

Love your info Tom, keep digging buddy, this is enlightening.

I can't remember where the article was, but I do remember reading about a blown 6.2L at one point, it was unmodified as well, no tune or Supercharger that would alter it in such a way that it might fail as spectacularly as it did. Other than that, I haven't heard any other 6.2L failures. And off the top of my head I can't recall reading about any 3.7L's failing. I can't help but wonder if the 6.2L and 3.7L are actually less problematic than the 5.0L and Ecoboost, or if it just seems like the 5.0L and Ecoboost are more troublesome simply because they are the volume selling engines.
