2017 Gum Flapping Thead....
Had an early start this morning and had to be at the YCSA range at 0700. Was running a couple of minutes behind and wanted to get there before all the coffee and donuts were gone.
We unloaded 300 60# bags of concrete and anchored them into a steep river bank. We are trying to mitigate erosion being caused by current that was changed by a landslide just upstream on the opposite bank.
Well, one thing led to another and instead of 1 to maybe 1 1/2 days in the Fossil Beds, it stretched out to 3 1/2. Staying at the State Park, (SP Access Pass so its free), was a last second "why not?" decision. Original plans were to actually spend a night and a day in Redmond at one of my cousins places. I had told her we would be there when we were at a family reunion on the homestead here in the valley, a couple of weeks earlier.
When we had spent so much time that day in the John Day Fossil Beds, we decided we should probably spend that night at the Ochoco Divide Camp Ground, like we had the night before. When we got to the Campground we decided we had a head of steam up and we should keep going. By the time we got into Prineville, we decided that that the "head of steam" had turned into a led weight and Redmond was probably a mile too far.
So, we hung a left and ended up at the Reservoir. We called Susan and told her and her husband we would see them the following afternoon after we had hit the Erickson Air Museum in Madras. Then my wife failed me when her I Phone couldn't get enough signal to get on the internet and I couldn't contact you or Allen.
This was one of about 5 unscheduled schedule changes on this trip. It's been fun traveling this summer and seeing something we hadn't thought about and saying, "Why not! No appointments and nothing saying we have to be home on a set day!" (We actually spent an extra unplanned week at Diamond Lake and in Roseburg last week.)
So after the Reservoir and Madras Air Museum, we ended up at Susan's in Redmond, then on to La Pine (change 4) and then the High Desert Museum (change 5) - along with a night in the "wild" out some USFS road next to a cattle guard and a sign saying "open range". Didn't see any cattle or vehicles. Didn't even hear any of that stuff. Then there was the rodeo in Sisters............
Then it was a marathon run for home. Almost got sidetracked at Big Lake and then Detroit Lake, but didn't have the boat or fishing poles with us so we continued on to home.
Interesting occurance....our YCSA range building was broken into the other night - morning actually since it was after midnight. They had to walk in because the electronic pass coded gate wouldn't let them drive in. As 2 men, 1 woman and toddler (yep, the idiots brought their very young kid with them!) walked in, they triggered numerous IR motion and heat activated security cameras. They peeled the heavy wire grates back off of a small window, stuffed the toddler through the window and had him open the door.
They left the DVD player and Flat Screen TV, PA sound system and a bunch of other stuff. They never even tried to monkey with the 3 vault doors. All they did was take an old rifle with a blown up barrel we have hanging on the wall as a reminder of what not to do....
I guess maybe they saw the lights on a panel and thinking they activated an alarm system skedaddled. The folks were recognized from numerous security photos taken from numerous angles and were in jail by noon. I'll bet they got straight A's in school too......
