hello, 1994 bronco witha 5.0 to 5.8 swap from previous owner. the ecu is the suspect on a diag. its shutting the engine off when a test light was hooked up and a code was told that a ground in the ecu was gone. my question is do i get a 5.0 or 5.8 ecu or it does not matter? thanks so much this is driving me nuts!!
If you have the 5.8 engine in the truck, you'll need to get the 5.8 computer. The previous owner most likely had a 5.8 computer in there but I suppose it's possible he could have have the 5.0 computer tuned to run the 5.8. However, tuning that would be way too much money and effort. Probably quite a bit more expensive than just getting a 5.8 computer. If there are any identification numbers on the computer, you should be able to look it up and see what motor it is for.
So yeah, if you know it's a 5.8 motor, look for a 5.8 computer to get!
I am sure if it is still on the truck there is a white tag near the door hinges that gives the original computer info. Also you can use the vin number to code what engine. Since it was swapped to a 5.0 Rock auto sells them and BEWARE!!!!!!! if you use one from a salvage yard, check the capacitors for CORRISION. They have cause many of us grief including myself.Good luck TR
A 5L MAF computer will run a stock 5.8L engine just fine. If you are getting a new computer I would source one designed for a 5.8L as my first choice, but that's just me..
