Ranger project ideas

My dad has an old 97 ranger 4x4 with 4.0L automatic, that i am going to be buying from him soon. the truck has 153000 on it and still runs great. I would like to have a manual, but want to keep this motor. is it more feasible to buy a R1 T5OD transmission for the ranger that im going to buy from my dad or to buy a similar year ranger to put the 4.0L engine in? I will be doing the work by myself and with my dad, i can save a lot of money this way so i am open to the idea of expensive mods, but would like to buy used parts as much as possible.

Always cheaper to just buy what you want as it came from factory. So that means my recommendation is buy a different 97 Ranger 4x4 with 4.0 and manual trans if that is the exact truck you really want.

Is the Ranger from your dad a complete rust bucket or other major issues? If not, then buy it form your dad and just drive it, and then save your money so you can buy the exact truck you want later.

Its not rusty or weathered too bad, the biggest issue for using it as a daily driver is the slow leak coming from the rear window. But that isn't too bad of a fix I guess. Thanks

Here is another crazy idea! does anyone have any thoughts on sticking a 4.2L v6 and T5OD R2 transmission from the f150 in a ranger? Is this possible?

Get your tape measure out to verify this, but I'm pretty sure the 4.2 engine is too wide to just slip in without doing some major modifications.

I agree that you should drive it & maintain it as it is while looking for a vehicle with a manual transmission.
