Let me start by saying I am not sure if this is the right section... Anyway my Father and I are thinking of adding another truck to the fleet. He currently has a 2001 F-250 4x4 and I drive a '95 Taurus SHO.
I am trying to get away from driving the SHO in the winter and Dad wants something a little easier to park in the city. Anyway we were looking at the F-150s and Rangers. I have personally owned 2 Rangers and LOVED them. Dad has owned a few F-150s and likes them too. College and lack of financial stability caused me to sell my previous Ranger (still miss it).
My question is what do you recommend? Dad has the F-250 so the 'new' truck wouldn't do much towing at all which caused me to lean towards a Ranger. But the gas mileage (only considering 4x4) isn't a whole lote better and the prices are getting close between the Ranger and '150s. The combos I am looking at are a S/C 4x4 Ranger or a short bed F-150 (either cab style will work). I am note sure what I am looking for in the replys... Thanks for the comments suggestions!
When I was snooping around for a Ranger with the big V6 in it I noticed the prices between the Ranger and the 150 were not too far apart. My main determining factor in getting anything is...does it have a manual transmission? Well, I just happened to be talking to the lot person about the little ranger and told him I'd rather have a 150 but trying to find one with a manual was like looking for hens teeth. He grinned, looked over his shoulder and said..."I just happen to have...." and the rest is history. And I LOVE my F150 a lot more than I ever would have that Ranger.
I guess you need to decide what your needs are going to be. Personally, I and the wife feel a lot more secure in the 150 on the highway, rather than be down in a little "bump,bump...what was that?" type of car...as the semi driver goes merrily on his way. Our Aspire was a real contributing factor to getting my truck.
Good luck in your decision.
I'm of the opposite opinion. I'd much rather buy an auto, especially after owning a half dozen manual tranny trucks in my life. And an extended cab Ranger is a far cry from a 'bump bump' car. The 8.8 rear end is the same as is used in some F150's. My 10 year old Ranger has a better highway ride than my '02 F150 and is more reliable as well. And my 4.0 auto Ranger gets as high as 21.7 mpg on the highway and the best I've squeezed out of my F150 is 14.99.
So, imho, the right Ranger can be more comfortable, more reliable, more efficient and less expensive to buy and insure. BTW, I wouldn't think about buying a Ranger with anything other than the 4.0. You couldn't give me a 4 banger and the '05 Ranger with 3.0 that I test drove last month was slower and noisier than my 10 year old 4.0.

I agree with Rocky. Although I do not own a Ranger, I have an Aerostar with the 4.0 and auto tranny. I get about 19MPG city/country and 23-25 Highway, and the Aerostar weights much more than the Ranger as well. The 4.0 is definately the best motor package...plenty of power for anything...however, I would love to see a 302 as an option
I'm all for the F150. My family and I used to live in Houston and the traffic accidents there can be pretty bad. After seeing several accidents involving full size vehicles and mini's with the mini's being totaled and the full sizes needing new bumpers or less. I sold the Honda family car and bought a full sized conversion van. We have less kids to worry about now but, I'm still sold on full size vehicles. I now have a f350 crew with 8' bed and dual rear wheels. It's not great for parking but one things for sure, if we have an accident, my family has a much better chance of driving home uninjured.
I would recomend the 4.0 rangers also. Good on gas and very reliable. Im a auto tech student and personally I dont like crawling under my cars too much because im always under someone elses so I bought the ranger because they are very reliable and that also keeps money in my pocket.
All around a yes for the 4.0 and no for any other motor in the Ranger. ok. I think I just need to figure out excatly what I am gonna use the truck for and then pick one based on the the prices. Thanks for the replies.
I talked things over again with my Father last night. I jumped the gun a little and I doubt we will be getting a truck soon. I just can't justify it at the moment. Maybe over the summer. I think I will just spent the money and fix the trans in my other SHO. I appreciate the time you guys took to reply. Thanks.
