4x4 inop

I have a 2008 F250 6.4l diesel. The 4x4 stopped working the other day. i get the lights on the display when i first turn over the key so i know the lights work. however, i get no indications when i turn the switch and there is no engagement of the 4x4 at the front wheels. I have checked the fuses/relays and changed the vac solenoid and the switch on the dash. I have done a thorough examination of the vac hoses and feel fairly certain there is no leak.

When I manually lock the hubs i get no indication in the display and no engagement in the front wheels. I jacked up the front end and when I manually lock the hubs, I can turn the front wheels and see the drive shaft turn and it disengages when i unlock the hubs. I suspect T. Case motor may be the culprit. Does this seem logical and does the T. Case motor affect the light on the display in the cab?

thnx guys.

My first guess would be the shift motor for the transfer case. Try tapping it with a hammer and see if it works then. Otherwise someone else with more experience with the ESOF system will probably chime in.

My buddy was having an issue with his transfer case not working and the wiring harness on the back of the transfer case shift motor was partially unplugged.

I am not entirely sure I am following. You have ESOF and when you switch to 4x4 your selector and you get the signal on your dash 4x4 is engaged? Did you actually check the vacuum to see if your vacuum pump and selector under the hood are working? When you manually engage the hubs are you thinking the dash selector will light up? Did you check at the drive shaft when using the 4x4 selector on your dash and did that also lock up the shaft?

You may be moving to the transfer case too quickly.

Hey Steve thanks for responding.
I do not get any indications on the dash that 4x4 is engaged weather i select 4hi/4lo on the selector in the cab or when i lock the hubs manually. i did not check the shaft when i used the selector in the cab but the hubs did engage the shaft when i manually locked the hubs but no 4x4 indication on the dash. I am not getting any feed back on the dash at all. The vac pump is running although i do not have a hand held tester for the vac i did inspect the lines and could find no obvious breaks. What do you think?

If the transfer case motor is shifting ,you can hear it in the cab. When the transfer case shifts you will get a light on the dash. As suggested tap it with a hammer.

You can tap it with a hammer, but also could verify it is getting power since so far you have no indication the switch does anything. Locking the hubs manually does not light the dash indicator. And you have verified your 4x4 is not working, i.e. you are not just relying on the dash indicator?

I am not sure there is any power getting to the t.Case motor. Not sure how to test the power supply at the motor. I used a test light on the electrical connection at the t. case motor but honestly i am not very savvy when it comes to electrical stuff. any guidance would be helpful and thnx again for the support.

There is a lot of stuff on the Internet on troubleshooting the transfer case starting with quickly verifying the switch is working. Goggle "troubleshooting super duty transfer case" and I think you will find enough to proceed. I did mine quite a while back and it took me longer to crawl under my truck than to do the checking, but I do not have pictures.

check to see if you have power at the switch buy taking the switch out taking your test light to the connector. i would suggest a good multimeter a fluke is a great brand. a test light will light up no matter what voltage it gets a multi meter will be a better choice. next have someone sit in the cab while you go under the truck to the tcase and unplug the tcase motor and see if you get power to the connector.
google is going to be your friend to see how much power it needs to work the tcase motor

Agree with everything you said. This is really basic stuff. I also would second your comment regarding the use of a test light. That can be really misleading. I will use one to locate a hot lead, but never when voltage is an issue.
