During the production run of the E4OD were there any changes that would effect the use of different PCM modules, or engine aside any PCM from a truck with that tranny will operate it correctly?
I know there was a change in how the solenoid pack was controlled by ECM. Don't remember specifics, seems like solenoid packs could be swapped to solve issue. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
There is a diode (device that allows current to pass in one direction, but not in the other) that is resident (I believe) in 94 & earlier E4 solenoid packs, but is resident in the computer of 95 & up trucks with the E4. I can't find the actual info right now.
If wrong or backward, some one will certainly say so.
5.0/5.8 engine E4 trans combos are roughly interchangeable in some cases, but 4.9, 460 & diesels are usually specific themselves.
What are you trying to do while we wait for greater edification?
As mentioned, starting with the 1995 model year, they changed the solenoid pack and PCM. If you have a 1995-1997 Truck, you must use a 1995-1997 E4OD and a 1995-1997 PCM.
1989-1994 Trucks must use a 1989-1994 E4OD and PCM.
guys,
Thanks for the great info, I also got an answer from the transmission forum, they changed the solenoid packs with diodes in them to diodes in the PCM in 1995 so you either have to swap the older solenoid pack into the newer 95 and up E4OD and use an older PCM or use a 1995 or later PCM with the 1995 and later E4OD. According to a Ford engineer on the forum using a redundant older solenoid pack with the newer PCM is not a problem FYI.
