'99 Explorer Eddie Bauer has clicking in dash. Sounds like a heater/AC door opening and closing. It goes off after a few minutes. It's still there with the engine off and the key on. What is it and how can I fix it. Thanks.
The clicking could very well be the blend door motor trying to position itself, but being damaged and unable to. There are several posts on this forum that describe the sound, the problem, and a few different options to fix or ignore.
I'm not familiar with the V8 Explorers, and I'm not positive on this, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the engine had to be completely removed from the vehicle to replace the oil pan. That would explain the 12+ hour time to replace it.
Sound like you are describing the HVAC Blend Door Motor. Small plastic gears with damaged or missing teeth. Should only happen when the air is turned to hot as it is trying to open the door but misses and falls making thump or click type sound. There are many good visual video instructions on web. Typically just one motor per car, located behind lower dash central area. If there is not an access panel to reach it you may have to remove center console. A few screws and pop in pins and you can do yourself to save hundreds from dealer. Motor should be $50 to $100.
Echo and shorod, you hit the nail on the head. I read everything about it I could first also. I removed the blend door actuator, what a pain, took it apart and found the smallest gear had a couple of teeth missing. I removed the gear that moves the door, reinserted it and checked for door movement. The door was fine. Ordered the actuator from Amazon, $25, and it'll arrive this week. The actuator is behind the glove compartment, has three screws to remove it, one is behind it and really hard to take out. I found out adding length to my 1/4" ratchet handle allowed me to feel with one hand and turn the wrench with the other. There's very little clearance. Maybe this will help someone down the road.
