Oil pan

I need to change the oil pan gasket on a 94 with a 302 auto. I wanted to know if I can do this without removing the engine mounts. Also which is better the rubber gasket or the cork? The rubber gasket says to install it dry. Should I do this or use some kind of sealant, and if so what type? They really weren't to helpfull at autozone so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Good luck! It is a pain to do. You do have to remove the two engine mounts but that is not very hard to do. Jack the engine up until the bell housing hits the firewall. You still will not have enough room to move the oil pan out of the way while you do it, just have patience and replace the gasket while trying to move the pan out of the way. This was the case when I went to replace the oil pump on my truck, I could not even get to the last bolt so I just pulled the whole engine out and put in a new one.

I replaced my pan gasket about a year ago on a 94 Bronco with a 302. You can do it without jacking the engine up the Y pipe causes a little bit of a problem but I didn't unbolt it. I bought my gasket from Ford it is rubber and it has a steel strip molded in both sides which will keep it from slipping out the side of the pan. clean the outside of your pan real good, lower the pan and clean the lip of the pan and the bottom of the block, now you can slip the gasket around the outside of the pan then lift one side of the gasket over the lip on the pan at a time. Put the gasket in place seal the corners with sealer then bolt the pan up.

Do a search ! You will find tons of info on this. Some will lift the engine and others will not. Both work. Some will finagle the gasket around the pan and others will cut the gasket. BOTH ways work but there is always some arguments as to which is best. You read them and be the judge.

Good luck,

By the way, I am going to do this soon cause I already bought my FelPro rubber gasket. Now, it's just getting the time / nerve to do it.
