Borg Warner T-18 4 Speed

Hi all, my 1963 step side has the Borg Warner T-18 4 Speed behind the original 223 six cylinder, just wondering will this gear box take a V8, specifically a 1970's 302?

Or will I be better off putting a C4 Auto behind the 8?

Cheers

PNYGTA Answer yes, but to the second part, I would put a early 90s AOD behind a 302 that I was installing. That ol boy needs help with mpgs and OD will do that. My O.

Installed 302 in the 65 with the T18 over 30 years ago; rarely if ever use compound, been the family work horse and daily driver since. Average around 18 mpg; however, as John noted, installing AOD would likely improve on that?

Seem to recall reading one way of distinguishing between the the 98 4sp to the T18 is the position of reverse gear; T18 forward, toward the dash; whereas, the 98 the shift lever is aft, toward the seat, can anyone verify this??

No T-18's until 1965, your truck has the Warner T-98 4 speed that was used thru 1964.

The reverse in a T-98 is over right and up towards the dash.

New Process 435: Reverse is down, towards the seat. Warner T-18 thru 1972: Reverse is up, towards the dash.

I don't know where reverse is on the T-98, but this is the trans the OP has in his 1963.
