wanna replace 3spd in 65.
motor runs awesome. would like to swap out for a 4 or 5spd. not to worried about mileage, so it does'nt have to be an overdrive. plan for this to be my daily once i get power steering and power brakes(maybe discs up front)
what's a good swap?
thanks,

I assume your truck is 2wd (if not, disregard most of what I've
written).
1. If you want a 4 speed with granny gear, look at the T18, T19 or NP435 4 speeds. They're all 1:1 4th gear, but b/c of the granny 1st gear, they're not the best transmissions for street performance. My 72 F100 (2wd) had a 302 and T19 four speed. Should drop right into your truck. This is the cheapest solution.
2. If you want a bullet-proof four speed (with a "normal" 1st gear and 1:1 fourth) find a used Toploader 4 speed. Toploaders will bolt up to your 302 bellhousing and they generally sell for $300-500. Look at the following pages for information on Toploaders (I am in no way suggesting that you buy from either place).
http://www.toploadertransmissions.com/
http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/
The second page lists tag codes. Make sure you don't get an overdrive toploader unless you want one.
3. You could swap in a late-model T5 (such as from a Mustang) or find
a late model F150 w/ a 302 and 5 speed. Some places sell kits to easily adapt the T5 to early 302's (since the Mustangs usually used a cable activated clutch). Check out a Mustang mag or the web for possible vendors. I don't know much about the 5 speed put behind
the latter F150s, but you could probably look at one and figure out how to make it work.
4. Finally, you could invest in a Tremec TR3550, or TKO 5 speed. Both
are aluminum case 5 speeds, (4th is 1:1, 5th is usually .68:1) and are heavy-duty cousins to the T5. They share many of the same dimensions w/ the Toploader (speedo gear, bell housing bolt pattern, cross memeber mount points), so it's a pretty easy bolt-in. The only car (I know of) where these appeared new was a couple years of the Mustang Cobra R, so you're unlikely to find a used one. The input shaft is a little longer than the toploaders
and other Ford 4 speeds (so you'll need a spacer plate), and thus you'll probably need to shorten your driveshaft. Again, poke around the web or a late-model mustang mag to see who's selling TKOs and what type of kit they'll offer you (places specialize in adapting TR3550s and TKOs to early model cars...this is how I got the TKO into my Torino).
Hope this helps...
