On moving to the Pacific NW I sold my MG and a rough '51 F1 project truck. I thought my days of fooling around with old cars and trucks were behind me, but on Labor Day last year I took the plunge and bought a '56 F100 out of Fresno, CA over eBay. My daily driver was sitting outside until about a month ago when a storage bay in a nearby U-Store opened up to accommodate the truck for the winter months. I had been trying to find a vacant lot on which to build a garage / shop, but prices people were asking were unreasonable. Now, on last Friday, I purchased a place about 300 yards from my home in a 'Sheriff's Sale' (foreclosure). For less than the price for a vacant lot and the price for a 'minimal' garage, I was able to buy a somewhat dilapidated house with garage and shop. It will require some work to rehabilitate the house which will likely become a rental. The garage / shop needs only a little clean up and a new overhead door. Now there is space for my truck, my son-in-law's boat, my motorcycle, my son's motorcycle and some shop space left over. Here is the future stable for our toys:
Ironically, the lighter color is close to the color of my truck.
Nice grab, looks ideal for what you need. Wish a place like that was easy to find cheap in southern California.
But a tip, I would edit your picture since you've now put the address out for the entire world to see where you are going to be storing all this stuff.
Great score. It is always interesting to me when homes that are not usable have quite serviceable outbuildings. Guess the prior occupants just didn't bother to trash them in the same way.
Tip appreciated, 46fordtruck. I feel moderately 'safe' in posting the address for the property. I believe it is unlikely that the FTE forums where I have posted would have an audience of thieves and the address was published repeatedly in local papers announcing the sale. Also, it will be awhile before we will be able to use the garage / shop, but insurance went into effect on Monday. The house and the garage both need lots of help. My old truck is a modest, stock, unrestored truck and my son-in-law's boat was given to him just to haul it away. He did rehab it into a duck hunting boat. The place is only 300 yards from my home, on a state highway, and next to a busy, well lighted, church parking lot. We'll have chain link fencing enclosing the lot and Morton is a small town pretty far from anywhere. All that being said, I agree with you and I will try to edit the post and redact the address. Thank you for your observation and your sound advice.
FortyNiner, I wish that your belief that the garage was in better shape was true. Actually, the house and the garage / shop are in decent shape. Being unoccupied for a number of years has been the greatest factor in the deterioration. Today I installed new door handles, locks, and deadbolts. An overhead garage door will be next, but a small dumpster will arrive on Friday and it will be filled with trash from the garage on Saturday. Much of the house rehab will begin when better weather arrives in the spring, but there will be numerous breaks in the work for truck and motorcycle outings.
I made a purchase 2 months ago at a sheriffs auction with plan to fix the double wide up and clean up the 2.5 acres somewhat and flip it. My granddaughter and her husband helped me with the clean up and we discussed letting them buy it, sell their house, sell the double wide and build a new home and of course we said OK, this was 4 weeks ago and they have sold the double wide, closed last week on the sell of their house and are waiting for new plans for their new house to arrive this week. All I could say was WOW, I have been trying to sell my house for 2 years. I'm having dreams of all the money I could have made, good luck with .yours.
