Original engine

Just bought 86 f250, owner said he swapped motor for a 351 carburetor from the original 302 efi, are their any symbols or stamps on the engine to tell what size or year or anything?

The VIN is more than likely on the engine block. You can use a number of VIN decoders online to find out about your truck.

The easiest way to tell 351w from 302 at a glance is to look at where the timing case meets the drivers side cylinder head.

If flush or nearly so it's a 302. If there is 1/2" between water passage and head you have the taller deck height of a 351.

Ford never - at least not within the last 50 years - put a vehicle identifier on an engine so that's not possible.

Wow never knew that! That's weird, how does a person tell if they're buying a true #s matching vehicle? Is there anything that identifies that the engine belongs to that vehicle?

I don't think there is any way to tie an engine to a specific vehicle identification number.
Engines are assembled and stacked up like cord wood.

If there were still a build tag, you could be sure the engine was assembled a week (or whatever) before the truck rolled off the line.
"period correct" is as close as you're going to come.

There is no such concept as "numbers matching" with Ford.

That is how it is in the AMC world.
Each block & head have a casting "clock/date" and should be cast before the car/truck was rolled off the factory floor.
The only time this my "get you" is if the block or heads were replaced under warranty with service parts.

I would think Ford also would have casting date/time on blocks & heads and as side check them to see if they were cast before the truck rolled off the floor.
Dave ----

ps: AMC cast the CID on the side of V8 motors. only time it was not there is for service blocks as they could be bored out to any size from 304 up to 401

Anything from Fords casting centers was left to 'season' before machining so a casting date might be months or years before it was finally put a car.
Blocks, heads, manifolds would be cast in batches but only be machined as demand dictated.

i.e. we're going to need 250,000 302's for 1984.
Begin casting them in May.
Model year production starts in August with 10,000 Mustangs at XYZ.
Machine and assemble 10k engines starting in late July to keep that line fed.

I see your point, wonder how AMC did it all be it not the large numbers others had.
