question on 351w

well i just got through replacing the stock exhaust with something much better. i figured i would go ahead and get my oil changed. i do and when i get home i look at teh slip they gave me and read 5.0 302 next to f150 and 1988. this made me worrya bout the guys changing my oil. as i know that i have a 5.8L 351 in this truck. its listed as such when i look up the vin # as well. is the 351w i think mine is a w, is it that hard to tell apart from the 302? makes me wonder if these guys knew what they were doing. especialy since they couldn't even start the truck.... i had to do that for em.

EI V8 5.8L HO this confuses the heck out of me. just check vin again adn got this.i know i have a 5.8L 351 but which one is it. i was told the 351 w was the one with efi and thats what i had by some people on these forums. but this proves that indeed it is not. i was told by the owner that this was not the normal engine that came in these trucks but i never did find out what it had. he really didn't know what the name of the engine was. its an 88 f150 with efi. this is what confuses me. the w ho engines don't have efi. so what engine is it. engine has never been changed. so what engine is this?

Is it carbed or efi? The 88 model were supposed to all be efi. The oil doesn't matter just tell them to put 10w-30 in it and be content with it. What are you asking your post is a little confusing to me? If you want to determine if it is 302 or 351 measure the intake the 302 is somewhere around 9" wide and the 351 11" I cannot be specific as I cannot remember exactly but that is close. Measure the width and post it on here or feel in the back of the motor behind the intake if you feel two fairly tall ridges then it is a 351. Let us know if you figure it out, later

your vin on an 88 should be a Y- (4.9)300 n- (5.0)302 or H- (5.8)351

i know its a 351 5.8L but i want to know which one it is. its an h on the vin. anyway i check the vin and it said it was this:EI V8 5.8L HO. its an efi engine so this is whats confusing me. the 351w ho are not efi engines so i am curious as to what 351 i have. i know the ho part is correct due to the fact i was told by the original owner that the 351 in the truck was a tad different from most. but the engine was put in there at the factory there was never an engine swapped into it. its the stock engine.

Is there a engine decal on the valve cover? If there is look in the upper left corner if it has a W it's a 351W.

Right on top of the intake it should say 5.8l. Are you tring to ask wether or not it is a 351w or 351w ho? There are 351w ho with fuel injection 87 was the last year for the carb's. Either way it is a (w) motor

i know its a 5.8L but it doesn't say it anywhere on the engine. all it says is ford with the fuel injection. i know its a 351 5.8L v8 ho but im just curious as to which one it is. is it the 351w ho with efi or some other? it doesn't have the w that thewiz427 mentioned.

302 verses 351W

First if you can find someone that has a for sure 302 engine in it. If you have a for sure 351W HO engine the intake manifold will be noticeably wider than the intake on a 302 engine.

If you have a 351W HO the firing order will be different than a non-HO engine. Both 302 HO and 351W HO have the same firing order.

The H in the vin means it's a ho motor at least it does in 87 and earlier. It is a 351w ho. the 351m and 351c haven't been made for many years and they have never had fuel injection.

there are no real differences. ON the carbed 351 HO it meant it simply had a 4 bbl intake and E5TE heads which are identical to the mustang E7TE except they have larger combustion chambers little better than the usual head but nothing special. So in your case being it is an efi your intake is the same as other efi's the only difference is you might have the E5TE heads for that matter all efi 5.8's might be considered HO's. IF your truck is all original take a look at one or both of your exhaust manifolds and see if you see E5TE stamped on them anywhere that would be a good sign they are more likely than not E5TE heads. Hope this helps some

It is the stock (cast) header if you will, connects the exhaust pipe to the heads, I don't really know how else to describe it, sorry. You might consider going to your local autoparts store and getting a haynes manual for the 80-96 ford trucks, it will provide a lot of info about your truck including a general view on how to rebuild the engine and change different components etc. for $15 or so. Let me know what you find
