Front sway bar mount D44 question

My 4x4 build has a D44 up front with all of the steering linkage from a 1978. The sway bar mount on the drivers side was modified by the PO to get it to clear something on the axle. Anybody have any idea how this is supposed to work? Doesn't even look like the right bracket as it has an extra bolt hole for something.

Anybody know what this is supposed to look like?

Thanks

I may be incorrect, but I think the only way to have a sway bar on our trucks (at least the front axle not sure about the rear) is to add one on your self. So if it doesn't look right, its because (I believe anyway) that it technically isn't supposed to be there. Like I said though, I'm not 100% positive.

That may not be incorrect. It is hard to tell, but with the 78-79 sway bar the drivers side bracket looks different from the passengers. This is because it actually sits on the pumpkin a little bit, where the passengers side sits completely around the tube. let me find some pictures. It should not matter fro the front whether or not it is off a 78-79 truck or a bronco, both should work so long as you have the brackets. Unfortunately, no one sells the brackets that I can find, just everything else.

That sounds right for what I am seeing. I can't seem to find the mounts anywhere. If someone had a picture that would be great, at this point I'm thinking a generic mount and my angle grinder. I'm sure I can do a better job that what the PO did.

Above is from number dummy to help your search, if you have one good bracket I would say the easiest would be to make another out of square tube stock.

If you didn't want to fab anything you could probably get something close from thee guys and just have to modify a bit.

This is an old old post of mine, one thing has changed: BOWMAN SALES & SERVICE in Bowman ND has 1 = 701-523-3257.
Applications for these brackets: 1978/79 F150 4WD Regular Cab. 1978/79 F150 4WD Super Cab is different.

There was no factory sway bar available for 1973/76 F100 4WD or 1975/77 F150 4WD

My driver side bracket look the same, the hole in the tab fit over a cast nipple on the housing to prevent the bracket from turning.

Interesting yours seems to have the same hack job as mine does. Interesting bit about the hole fitting over a cast. I didn't notice that when I took it apart.

Years ago ..... I added F & R sway bars from a '78/9 Dent side Bronc to my '77 F-150. In time I removed them. Until a few years ago, the brackets were still on the front where I had "tacked" them just to leave in place when I removed the bars. They are now tied to the bars, they are simple stampings ....like U-bolt saddles except the one on Dr. side is made to fit part way on cast carrier.

I had put the bars on because I had free access to the Bronco's remains, but I found they "bound" the suspension up too much on uneven ground.

Here's an two pictures that may help you though.

We did this on my son's 75 Ford Explorer . 75 axle was different from the 78/79 which most of these stabilizer bars came on whether it be a Bronco and actually I've only seen one truck that had the stabilizer bars whether it was placed on as an aftermarket item even though is the stock piece or if it was sourced from the Bronco either way the axles on the 78/79 F150 and Bronco have the cast type ends as opposed to the welded on wedges that the earlier models used, with that the casting on the passenger side also has the casting for the track bar mount so the stabilizer bar bracket on the passenger side is completely different and is located differently than it would if an earlier model would have had them because of the cast wedges and I've had to modify what I have on the F100 as far as a track bar so that I could use the stock bracket and even that had to be added onto. I ended up using the RuffStuff offset lower teacher mount so the sway bar sits as close to a stock location as possible. Hope this makes sense, no pics right know to illustrate
