So I have 2005 f150 with the 5.4L in it and I am looking to put in a custom exhaust and I wanted to know if I needed I code in order to do this? I was under the impression that as long as it was stock past the cats then I was alright but I have been told differently by other people. My other concern is that I own a boat that weighs about 8800lbs witch is inside my limit but I can't afford to lose any low end torque so will a new exhaust system affect that at all?
I do not understand this question, "I wanted to know if I needed I code in order to do this?"
I assume you meant to say a "tuner". If you change the exhaust from the cats back, you will be ok assuming you are keeping the O2 sensors. Depending on how much flow you gain, it **could** affect the low end a little. It WILL however decrease your gas mileage regardless of whoever tells you otherwise.
The factory ford system is decent, and flows good. Back in the days it was not the case. If you install a new exhuast it will be for sound improvement rather than performace. To get a nice performace boost, you would need a true cold air intake, new high flow cats, with new exhuast, and a custom tune done on a dyno. That is how you will get the true 15 HP gain, and for the money it would cost, you would be wasting it in my opinion.
Don't see how just changing exhaust from cat back will hurt power .... but on an otherwise totally stock truck I doubt you'll notice much of an increase either. If just doing it for sound or looks, then that has value to many.
As to mileage, no harm there either as long as driving habits don't change. A purring exhaust has cost many some mileage simply because the driver starts to "enjoy" the new tunes more and is soon more aggressive in throttle applications ..... but it's not the fault of the catback exhaust.
Alright I appreciate the feedback but if I won't see any noticeable power increase or I'll have a drop in gas mileage then I don't think I can justify spending the the money on an after market system just for the sound, even though that would be a big improvement over the factory.
