I have an exhaust the exits next to the passenger door. Is that stock? It really stinks with the windows down.
I am interested in getting a new muffler system, but dont have a place in Orlando to go. What should I be looking for? I really don't care too much about how it sounds. I am more comcerned about getting it away from the door and getting the best type of system for the big ol' 351 HO. Ok...I would like to have some sound. It would be a waste not to be able to hear that engine. How much should I be spending on such a system? Dual or single....I really dont care...I just want it to be the correct system for the truck.
Well, it depends on where you live; but, In many places, It's illegal to have exhaust that exits before the rear axle. Besides, that; as you have found....it stinks up your cab. You should be able to get a pretty nice 2 1/2 or 3" setup from the downtube back, for about $400-500.
Stock exhaust exit location is behind the passenger side rear wheel. Someone here has exhaust that exits in a similar loaction but I can't recall who at this point.
Depending on how much you want to spend there are plenty of systems available. Duals were not a stock configuration but many have done it. Personally, I have found that a well made, well tuned 3" single exhaust runs and sounds as good as any dual setup. I have been running Bassani Street Thunder system for about three years now and I love it. 3" single from Y-pipe through high flow cat. all the way to the 3.5" tip. Sounds really nice without all that ugly pop and rattle when you come down out of the throttle. The whole setup including headers cost me just over a grand in 2000. If you are looking for a cat-back setup, obviously less money. There are many systems out there but if you want the best setup for your particular vehicle look at the ones that are taylored to the specific vehicle in question. Bassani, Gibson, Borla, etc. have spent time researching and developing complete systems and cat back systems specifically for these trucks. Some others merely market this component or that one, claiming that they "will work" but, they haven't actually been tuned for that vehicle setup. The obvious drawback to going this route is the money involved...you will pay more for these systems, no two ways about that but, in my opinion the fact that they ARE tuned and developed specifically for that vehicle makes them worth the extra money.

Geezer and Greystreak.....thanks for the advice. I will have to decide if I want to start investing. I just got it and paid 1800, but I am trying to justify spending $$ on her. Are there any problems that may arise from me tinkering with the exhaust? The last thing I want to more problems. It does stink up the truck too! I am going to have to keep the new exhaust price kinda low, maybe I will wait and save to get it. Will I get better gas mileage? Are there other ways to get better mileage? Mine is REAL bad! Thanks again!!
A good tune up, make sure you have no vacuum leaks. A clean, working EGR valve and an oil change will all help with your fuel mileage.
Depends on what you mean by "tinkering". If you are under emissions inspection regulations you are somewhat limited in what you can do legally. You will hear some people tell you that losing your catalytic converter will gain you some power. Don't be too quick to eliminate it. Fedral laws surrounding them are stringent. If the cat. and Y-pipe are in good shape you may well consider a cat-back system. They are not as pricey as complete systems (headers, Y-pipe, cat., are not part of the cat back systems), but will yield noticable gains in power.
Thanks....I just put on a rebuilt carb and it is running pretty well. I will consider the options I have for the exhaust. There are no emissions here in FL, but I will not mess with that stuff. I appreciate the clarification on the eshaust. I am not too keen on this stuff and I have limited experience with Broncos.....thanks
I would track down an exhaust shop. they can do a complete exhaust for around 400 bucks. it would get you buy till your ready to spend the big bucks on your bronco.
