What year truck is it? The 2011's and early 2012 had a nut to tighten the filter into the housing. newer than that, they just drop in, and twist.

Where is the cracking occurring? Do you have any aftermarket gear up there?

That filter is pretty solid piece of plastic, I am not sure how it is cracking. Are you cracking it while installing it? I have found that some filters fit tighter than others. I put a little bit of lubricant on the plastic and it slides in smoothly!

Are you using Motorcraft replacements? Or some off-brand.

I know some people will use a strap wrench and a socket to help with the removal. Greasing the threads helps too.

I try to be careful to make sure the entire socket end is completely in the formed nut at the end of the filter housing when I turn it. It's also possible that you are over tightening past the "stop" as well. There is a little piece of metal or plastic sticking out that tells you the filter is tightened down all the way, tighten it past it and it breaks the filter housing.

Dak, Unless I'm confused, he said its the engine mounted filter that is cracking.

Dont have an answer for you, but I would stay away from the napa filters and only go with OEM motorcraft filters. they can be had from various places for about $50 a set.

I just changed my fuel filters yesterday and the new, Motorcraft, filter was very tight going in. I should have lubed it but got so far and it didn't want to come back out. I'll deal with that the next time the filter is due.
