I got the radio filter...sort of. They sent me the "upgrade" part, and I'm not sure yet if it actually works. I think I still have the whine in the radio, but the radio is messed-up anyway, so I'm not sure. This is the part:
Got the new radio installed Saturday. No ignition interference, and it sounds great! I'm not sure if the filter is responsible for the lack of interference, or if it's the design of the radio. Either way, the radio sounds good while driving. Thanks again for the part numbers!
That's pretty much a generic part... used to be when you installed a radio, many even came with it. The biggest radio interference came from the alternator (was a high whine) and ignition spark (a sort of buzzy static) - both could easily be diagnosed because they varied with engine speed. The Ford part was nothing special. These were also sold as "static suppressors",
"radio interference filters" and whatever else the manufacturers wanted to call 'em. Most noise primarily occurred on AM, so with most folks now listening to FM, this is not as big a problem (plus manufacturers have become better at limiting interference noise in the cars themselves.)
I have Taylor 8.2 Street fire s.plug wires, DS2 dizzy, MSD 6A box, run with a MSD TFI coil, straight 12v. I had a problem at first with radio interference. Got the MSD gizmo, and that resolved the issue. Now the noise, a slight static that revs with the engine, is returning. I thought maybe my plug wires were wearing out, since Taylor says 40K miles is their life time, and I should be right about there.
I was thinking about going with those nice new MSD 8.5 fancy pants wires, but whoa, they're like $90! and, undoubtedly, made in China. It really bugs me when American companies try to hide where their products are made so they can maintain a false reputation and high price.
Summit Carbs, Holley, Performance Distributors (DUI), MSD, to name a few.
Before the filter, on the old radio, there was a slight whine. But it wasn't consistent, and didn't seem to be tied to the RPM. That radio was pretty staticy anyway, and had to go
i don't know if the filter solved the problem, as I still had the whine on the old radio, but the new radio sounds great
