6.4 Repair Questions
Hello Folks,
I'm normally a 6.0 guy, but I took on a company with a few 6.4's too and they've asked that I work on them and I said yes.
So I have a 10 here that has a plugged DPF, so I'm gonna replace that, it also needs a thermostat and #2 glow plug.
Are there any tricks or surprises to doing the T-stat? DO you guys normally do the GP harnesses as well when replacing the glow plugs, that's a common failure on the 6.0 and the harnesses normally come out in 2 pieces so we just replace them when doing the GP.
Honestly this will be the first 6.4 I've personally had my hands on and I'm a little nervous about it as its "new" to me.
As far as going with a new DPF, he needs to keep the emission's intact as he's subject to DOT inspections.
Thanks In Advance,
Sarge

odds are that the cat converter will be plugged up also
then there is the root cause issue as to why the exhaust system got plugged up....is there oil burning from a turbo seal, work rings, combustion problem due to worn rocker tips, etc.
the DPF cleans pretty easy with about 3 gallons of berry's carb cleaner. it comes in a gallon can and 3 gallons is about 4 cans that will cost you about 100 bucks on amazon. I put mine in a tall plastic kitchen trash can that was about 14" in diameter, poure the berrys over it and let it soak for an hour. lift the DPF out and put it in another plastic can and rinsed it out with fuel. The Berry's will look like tar after this.
the EBP sensor probally needs to be removed and the EBP hole in the manifold cleaned out with a hanger. theres a you tube video on how to do that.

I would assume that the root cause is the thermostat sticking and the truck not coming up to temperature, also the truck has close to 160k on it, here are the list of codes pulled from it:
P0672- #2 Glow Plug Cricuit
P0128- Thermostat
P240F- DPF Restricted
P2452- DPF Pressure Sensor A
P246C- DPF Forced Limit Power
P2463- DPF Soot Accumulation
P0488- EGR Throttle/Performance
