noisy fuel pump
Hello all, I've been away, and still am, on deployment to far and exotic places fighting the war on everything for the USNavy. Before I left home I was going to remove and inspect my fuel pump which has been kind of noisy since the rebuild. It very well may have made this noise before but it wasn't noticed due to the exhaust leaks and generally poor running of the engine. I have a generally cyclic noise from the eccentric cam and fuel pump arm. Before I pull off the fuel pump and fan blade etc. Have anyone else heard this kind of noise, and should I be worried? It pumps fine...

There's a return spring in the fuel pump that keeps the lever in contact with the eccentric. When this spring gets weak (or goes away completely) the lever slaps against the eccentric. That's the noise you're hearing. It'll keep pumping until it finally goes out but it will probably fail sooner than later due to the shock of the sudden hit against the eccentric.
