Lift pump, and filter are installed as part of trying to clear up the noise. Still have loud noise like the valves are clatting like I have heard in the past when it has sat for months and it gets a cold start till all the fuel gets everywhere. I also checked fuel flow from Schrader valve and flow was steady. At this point I am worried that there might be another problem and plan to get a diesel shop to check it and tell me what is wrong unless I find the issue before then. I have rebuilt many engines but they have all been gas. Not sure what is causing the noise but it is sounding worse and worse. But I guess that is what happens when a truck is 18 years old. Takes longer than it used to to start. Almost sounds normal at mid throttle, much quieter almost like before Tuesdays start of the noise. But when it returns to idle it gets noisy again. I did not get around to changing the return lines but they have been damp for a few months and has been running great. Any ideas out there???
Is it almost like a dead knock when it returns to idle? If so with it running try cracking injector lines (its the same as pulling plug wires on a gasser) this will help you trace down the cylinder(s) that are causing your problem. If it goes away off idle and slowly returns at idle it may be an injector not atomizing the fuel correctly
I will be home tonight after leaving truck at home. Thank you for The plan. I might loosen all 8 and try to start and see if knock is gone. I don't think it will start but should be able too tell if knock is reduced (maybe).
You shoudl be doing one injector at a time. If your knock goes away then you have a dead injector. If one is dead, then its probably time to replace all of them.

Yeah, one at a time while the engine is running, you'll feel the cylinder missfire when you crack the line loose about 1/4 turn
The noise is so bad I don't like letting it idle. My plan is to loosing all lines and making sure fuel is getting to all injectors then tighten them all and do the one at a time.
Pensacola Diesel for the Injectors, good deal on 8 of them, then get on Ebay and get a IP from the Uhaul sales, they are brand new and tehre are plenty of them. Several guys have gotten them on here...
Well got to work on the truck tonight but before I got very far the noise got a lot worse. Found that the flex plate is either broke or something. I pulled the cover plate and can move the flex plate while the crank does not move.
