Got rear ended by a kid this evening, granted he got rear ended by an older lady who "didn't see him." We were both at a dead stop and I think she was probably doing 40-50 mph. She was able to slam on the brakes right before she hit, but she still got him good. We got the better end of the deal, that's for sure, but I'm still none to happy. I had everyone in the truck with us, including my 22 month old daughter. Now I need to spend a bunch of time getting different bids and having different shops do an inspection to make sure the hitch didn't bend the frame. Is it reasonable to insist on a new hitch, in your guys' opinions? It seems to have taken the brunt of the hit and we tow a fairly heavy TT, I don't want any issues with a trailer hooked to my family. Here are some pictures, keep in mind that this truck was pristine, nothing more than a couple rock chips on the bumpers.
I would insist on it since there is some damage on it. I would also make sure the insurance company replaces the car seat the 22 month old was in. Car seat manufacturers recommend replacing even in minor collisions.
Sorry to see that. Glad your family made it unscathed. Getting it right after a wreck can be a hassle and hopefully your state allows for diminished value that absolutely happens when the Carfax shows wrecks. If the hitch is bent at all, I can't see a body shop putting it back in service. It is a structural member and should be replaced if bent. They shouldn't give you any grief over it. Looking on the bright side, This is your opportunity to upgrade to a better hitch!

I'm kind of wishing it didn't happen right before Christmas. If it would have happened in, say, March or April when I had a fat stack of tax return I would be all about doing some upgrades. I'd love to have some heavy duty bumpers and hitch.

Thank you, I didn't even think about the car seats. I had three in the car at the time. Reps sent.
First off, glad to hear everyone is OK.
The hitch mounted trailer plug definitely saw some action there, if the is ANY damage at all to the actual hitch it has to be replaced, fight for it if you have to. Don't forget to emphasize that that rear hitch was mandated by the Feds for crash protection on the EX as it is a station wagon not a truck. If upon close examination the hitch is completely in damaged still fight for new mounting bolts as they did take a big shock load.
There are some good aftermarket hitch options available, some even cheaper than a factory replacement, some a little more. If the insurance is willing to replace it, maybe you can work it out where they will put up the money for an OEM unit and you can make up the balance on a heavier unit. I just installed a Torklift 20K SuperHitch and it is crazy beefy.
Good luck!
