Rebuild or replace

Took the 223 to machine shop to have bored, turned, and what ever else it might need. The guy looked up what a rebuild kit was going to be. Ouch. Just the kit was going to be just shy of $1000, not counting machine work. Is there a better option price wise for rebuild kit? Thanks Haroldmac.

I had my 223 (was a 215) rebuilt a couple years ago. I bought the rebuild kit for about $700 from Kanter not including the cam (had it reground). Machining and assembly was another $1100. Since then I've bought a new carb, dist, water pump, balancer, alternator, header, and misc fittings, bolts, hose, and belts. Still need to buy an intake. All that said, for an old six these can get pricey.

Machine work is no more expensive on one engine than another, with the exception of a stock valve job on a Flat V8. SBC, SBF, you name it, the cost to bore a cylinder, grind valves, etc. is the same per cylinder. The only variable is what shape the existing parts are in. If all the valve stems are worn, the guides worn, rockers bad, etc. the price goes up. $1000 sounds mighty pricey, but for what brands? Top-flight Clevite bearings, brand name pistons & rings? Ask for an itemized quote. The "engine kit" for my flat V8 was $685 3 years ago, without gaskets, and that included US-made bearings, Egge pistons, Hastings rings.

I have used several engine kits from here in the past with good results. Call them for specifics about the brands of parts in the kit.

I am thinking of rebuilding my flathead V8 and wondering how many miles will you get from a fresh rebuild?

From what I've read, near the same as any other c.i. engine. Today's oil makes a big difference
