Garage Door Opener Programming

I was able to program my gate (old school, single code - handheld transmitter), but when I try to program my newer, rolling code, 'learn button,' I just can't make it work.

I've programmed other cars, jeeps, etc., with those garage doors by:

1. Press learn button
2. Push the button you want to work it
3. You're done

But it doesn't work with my new truck.

One odd thing I see is on the two buttons not programmed for the gate, pressing them makes them blink -- but the one programmed for the gate, pressing it makes a steady light?

I tried programming the garage to the gate button -- just because of the different behavior of the light -- but that didn't work either.

Anybody have the magic secret to make this work?

By the way, I did RTFM, but either I'm an idiot or something because following it didn't work either.

Call the hotline. Give them the model number for your garage door opener. Sometimes the process is diff depending on manufacturer

So I struggled with the garage door opener for a while and tried every option that I could until I did this.

1. Park the truck outside of the garage facing the opening.
2. Clear any existing codes pressing the two outer buttons simultaneously for 20 seconds or until it flashes fast
3. Simultaneously pressed one of the visor homelink buttons along with the button on the handheld remote until indicator flashes fast and release both buttons.
4. Enter the garage and push the learn button on the operator itself
5. Return to truck and push the same homelink button from step 3 and the door began to close and one more press stopped it and one more reversed it.

Bottom line is that pressing the learn button and then the homelink visor will not work on a lot of openers.

Hope this helps.

Great job. This just worked for me. You saved me the time of trial and error because it didn't work the way it's documented in the manual. I tried and failed the day I brought the truck home and hadn't gotten around to this approach.

I know that a lot of forums that I am are on create sticky's for posts that are helpful like the garage door opener. Do they do that on this forum?

This is something that I would to have loved to have found before I spent two hours driving the dog and the wife crazy with the garage doors going up and down trying to program my homelink before finally giving up and putting a garage door opener clicked on the visor. It wasn't until two weeks later when the wife was gone I let the dog outside and went through the trial and error process and finally figured the right procedure out (which again is not what the manual lists).

Any thoughts on getting posts like this readily available? It may be and I just don't know where to look for them so I apologize if it is.

Second the "sticky" vote for this thread! If the manual is wrong this thread will be very helpful.

celeste646 - Did you do this with the truck ignition "ON" I assume? I'm at work right now and can't try the procedure.

Just did this two nights ago. Bought a 2015 F-150 visor with Homelink from eBay. Plugs right in, bolts right up and works like a charm!

Now, to find one more black one for the passenger side...

man I wish I could give you a solid answer but it's been so long I can remember. I want to say it was ignition on but the truck was not started. If you find out what works please post it so it will clarify for everyone else. Good luck! Hope it works! Let us know!
