Barn find
Thus is a picture of the ad I found on kijji.
This pictures and the last picture I got from George the original owner.
Bit of an update on my M3. Got the cab cleaned out. Looks like George spent a lot of time in the truck with his daughter from the amount of bobby pins I found in there. He told me she was learning to drive in the truck when she ran over the family dog and refused to drive it again.
I was surprised that mice never chewed up the old popcorn box. When I looked inside the fuel tank I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw. Never seen one this good before.
I took the top of the carb off and cleaned out the bowl and removed the fuel pump to clean out the glass and to test the pump. Seems to work fine, so I put it back together. I removed the water pumps and thermos stat housings and flushed everything out. Installed new thermos stats and put it all back together. I put new rad hoses on top and bottom. I drained the oil and cleaned out the filter housing and inserted a new filter. Stupid filters are expensive up here in Canada. I think I paid somewhere around $28.00 for it at Napa. Filled up the rad and right way the top metal pipes that connect to the thermos stats start leaking all over. Small rust holes. Drained the rad down and replaced the metal tubes with some spare ones I had.
After I cleaned up the points I put some fresh gas down the carb and tried to start it. It took a while but it finally fired but the starter would not shut off. It kept running even though I had disconnect power to the selonoid. George told me he had replaced the starting selonoid previously sometime in the past. I happened to find the original selonoid in the glove box when I cleaned it out and installed it. It worked fine, after jumping the selonoid it started right up and the starter disengaged. Right way the left water pump started to leak. I had happen to buy a rebuild kit for a water pump a year ago at a swap meet for $5.00 so I had a Nieghbor who is quite handy when it comes to mechanical things come over and help me rebuild it. whike I had the one pump off I figured I would rebuild the other one right away so I ordered a rebuild kit out of Langly BC. Around $50.00 later it showed up in my mail box. I was going to order new pumps but nobody had any in stock. Non in Edmonton ,non in Langly(they get them from Dennis Carpenter) ,non at Bob Drakes. The new rebuild kit was different from the one I bought at the swap meet. It had two less pieces and was assembled differently. Needless to say we ended up wrecking it. It didn't go together as nicely as the old kit did. Figures they try to save a few cents with less parts but still charge the more for it and make it harder to install. By this time I called Dennis carpenter and they had a new shipment of water pumps in from their supplier. Two brand new water pumps ordered and they are waiting to be installed. I've been too busy with snow removal and trying to get my shop addition done to work on it.
Since I received the truck I've been searching for a Dana 60 to put in it. No luck at the picnpull yards locally. Put an ad on kijiji and had a few responses. One looks promising but it's 4 hour drive one way from me. It has the 3.54 gearing that I want since that is what is in my 48 f68 and it seems to be working good. I happen to call an old friend from high school on a totally different matter relating to my shop addition as he is a building inspector and after I asked my building question I asked him if he still had the 1969 F250 Ranger that I had sold him 20 years ago and he said he still had it. He doesn't drive it but he starts it once and a while. The mice got into the seat and made a mess. I asked if he wanted to sell it and he said is nephew showed some interest in it and he would get back to me. That was three weeks ago and he called me today and said that his nephew wants the deck off it and I could have the truck back for FREE. I was like "Really for free, great". This is a picture from 20 years ago. The box is gone ,I think he sold it or gave it away. So now I have my Dana 60. The truck is an automatic so it should have the gears I want. Now I just need to find some spare time to work on it again.
,Doug.
I too have a 1952 M3 that I bought in Indian Head, SK. last year. I am in Esterhazy, SK. I have been gathering parts for my truck, and managed to find a Dana 60 with 3.73 gears in it.
Cheers,
Chris
