Every so often I get this pop up box (about 1/10th of the screen, always just grey) saying that my computer is vulnerable through messenger or something like that. I don't even use the messenger. Anyways it says to go to such and such website to find out how to prevent this. I'm wondering if there is some way to just turn this off or get rid of windows messenger. Thanks for any help.
I’m not sure where the Services are in XP but in 2000 they are in Administrative tools.
If you go to services and disable messenger it should take care of your problem. Also why you are in there you might want to disable things like Telnet, FTP Server and Web Server. These can be enabled by default and are great backdoors for hackers.
No, it's just a utility originally designed to allow you to send a message to another user on you LAN. But, as usual, the spammers have found a way to take advantage of it.
