So I bought a 1999 f250 6.8. I have the engine out now and I discovered that I have 3 plugs that have blown out before, 3 broken coils. So with the heads off I pulled the plugs and it looks like the previous owner used helicoils on all 3. Its weird though because 2 plug holes have over-sized threads about halfway down and the other plug hole has over-sized threads all the way down. So I'm debating whether to get the time-sert 5553 kit and do all of the holes and get the add on too for the larger holes or just get the 5600 and do the 3 holes that have already blown out in the past? The other 7 holes look decent.
Can't believe I misspelled thread in the title!!!!
If the engine is out and on a motor stand I would fix all of them before you put the motor back in the truck.... The reason is its a heck of a lot easier doing it with the motor out then it is with the dang thing sitting under the hood where EVERY thing is in the way................. Just my opinion your mileage may vary.......
If the heads are already off the motor either do all of the plug holes now ..........OR, find a set of the later model PI heads with the higher thread count plug holes and a matching intake manifold.
Either way I would also do all of the exhaust manifold studs while the engine is out of the truck, so much easier to work on them that way and they will eventually need to be replaced if not already missing some.
Had one blow out.......friend of mine with a shop did both heads with the inserts.....rebuilt the heads.........2400.00 total. Lot of money but stopped my worrying.
