Spark plug helicoil back-out
Help! I was replacing plugs in my 2001 F-250 with the V-10 and had a helicoil come out with one of the plugs. I borrowed a bore scope to look down in the hole and it looks like there's some helicoil still in there. Is it possible to clean it out with a tap and put a new helicoil in or do I have buy one of the big insert kits or am I just screwed and need to take the head off? I haven't had the truck long and haven't dealt with these modular engines much before. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

I THINK you can use the timesert kit 5553 to still repair it once you get the rest of the helicoil out
Pretty sure I read about it on their website
Someone else will chime in and know for sure but do not re-helicoil the plug well

Helicoils are usually pretty hard so you can't cut them out with a tap. You can sometimes get under the edge with a pick and work them out. A helicoil is a poor repair option as you found out. The Timesert kit is the best out there and they have different sizes. The Timesert is better because it is aluminum like the heads and the insert is swaged into place when the tool finishes forming the last few threads. This locks the insert in place so it does not back out.
