Luckily I don't have to deal with ABS on the front. E99 built 10/98
I do plan on replacing the bearings but I also plan on going easy with it.
I am taking time off work since I have a lot of vacation time to burn so I will have about 7 days to get this done.
Ya gotta love it when your wife goes...well if you need it and will use it again later, then you should go get it.
WOOT! New 20 ton shop press in the SUV now. hehe
May be Harbor Freight but considering I don't do any of this for a living and it will prolly be used 4 or 5 times a year... Ill take it! Now to find a new home for it in the shop.
Holy crap! Ok That has got to be the best write up I have every seen.
parts listings... pics...descriptions. Looks like it probably took more time for the write up than it did for the job! Thank you for the link! Wouldn't of bothered posting if I had found that. Time to save it!
And it looks like I did get the right parts too. That's always a plus!
Now to run to the hardware store to get the pieces for the knuckle seal tool.
OK...new ball joints, outer tie rods, brakes all around, new tires... she drives straight. no longer fighting alot of play in the wheel...but...
when going through a slight dip at an angle so the tires hit 1 at a time, I get a popping sound and slightly feel it. like when going from the road into a parking lot..the dip there. to me it sounds like it is centered, but to the passenger, they feel it on their side so I would say passenger side.
so...what next should I check?
torsion bar end links
body mounts
inner hub bearings
Ummm no torsion bar... Solid front axle.
body mounts - will have to check those.
inner hub bearings - all new. rebuilt the hubs while I had it apart for the ball joints.
I was going to look at the sway bar end links and bracket mount bushings. Aren't these known to pop when worn? Don't remember if these are a common cause.

Yeah I meant sway bar when I said torsion bar, yeah they can pop and can go out frequently
x2 for sway bar end links. It's free to check. Remove the sway bar, put it in the garage, and go for a drive. You'll know pretty quick if it's the end links or not.
