Well it has been about 8 yrs and 130K miles since I change the ball joints in my truck and it is time for another set.
Except this time i want to be prepared. Last time I made multiple runs back and forth to the parts store for one thing or another as i went along so this time...i want to be ready.
So... parts list please!
I don't remember everything I ended up buying and in searching the site here, if I go with the part names I have found i bet the same parts have 3 different names.
Help please? Ready to do the work, just need to be sure I have all parts.
I know my axel u-joints are good and I plan on replacing the vacuum tubes and nipple for the ESOF hubs. Just need a list of everything else...other than the ball joints.
Yeah ok I see the ball joints in there.
I was also looking for things like outer axel shaft seals, Yellow hub o-ring...etc Figured if I was in there I am going to replace it.
Already added to my list new brake pads and new caliper brackets with slide pins.

Haha! Well, that's not a ball joint repair anymore, that's a front axle rebuild!
Put a thread together on it and I'll follow, but I don't have all those part numbers. I only changed the ball joints (and tie-rod ends, but that's neither here nor there.)
Yeah I have had sloppy steering for awhile. Tries to adjust the steering box... didn't help. So I replaced the sway bar, track bar, tie rod ends all last year.
Then I noticed yesterday that the front tires are worn unevenly but it doesn't wander so ...ball joints.
Just figure I would do other items while there. Need to get my ESOF working again anyway. Vacuum lines rotted and the nipple is clogged so....

My front tires were wearing unevenly, shocks was all it took to fix that...
I was thinking that as well but there are a couple of turns that I take to work that when I drive over them, I get a couple of pops that I can hear and feel. Also, I have notice some odd, floating steering sensations when cresting over a quick rise in the road. I will double check tomorrow before I start ordering parts to confirm but I still think ball joints. this is just too off to be shocks. besides, shocks wouldn't cause 5 inches of play in the steering wheel.
I received this list from another FTE member. Maybe bump it against your list and note where there are differences.

I like the kits. May be more $$ but at least I know I have what I need. And Spicer too. always did have good luck with their stuff on my other vehicles. Thanks!
A couple of things to think about:
If you are going to replace the hubs (or unit bearings) manually turn them before installation. It is amazing how frequently I have found bearings that were hard to turn because they were pressed together too hard at the factory. Also, check the needle bearings at the exterior side of the hub (they support the stub axle). Even the good hubs sometimes have crushed those needles too tight and jammed them in the races. (Even American manufacturers have assembly lines that focus on speed)
If you don't replace the hubs, use lithium grease through the ABS port-add 4-5 pumps and reinstall the ABS sensor. It will not change how the ABS system works.
If you haven't replaced the front differential oil seals, they are worth doing, if you are pulling your axles.
