Fuel pump DIY

Does any body have instructions on replacing the fuel pump. I need to replace mine. I know what it takes to remove the fan and belt, but just looking for any instruction on removing pressure from the fuel system.

Thank you,

I don't know anything about ford diesels but I presume there is a lift pump in the fuel tank and up front is the injection pump which I guess on a 6.7 ford would be the high pressure fuel pump.
What exactly are you trying to do?

You know the pump you need to replace? Sounds like you're asking about the high pressure one located on top of the engine?

Sorry I was not clear I am looking for the instructions on how to replace the upper high pressure injection fuel pump.

This is what I am installing:

2011-15 6.7 Powerstroke SuperStroke Pump

The vendor should provide some instructions along with whatever fuel lines you need to replace.

there is no injection pump. Only the HPFP that pressurizes the fuel lines leading to the injectors.

You should remove the lower fuel filter and that should release some of the pressure.

I would not do this without somemore info from the vendor.

NOTE: The fuel system cannot be relieved of pressure manually, the high-pressure fuel system loses pressure as the engine cools down. When working on the high-pressure fuel system wait until the engine is cool or 5 minutes, whichever is longer, to allow the high-pressure fuel system pressure to bleed off and the fuel to cool.

With the key in the OFF position make sure Fuel Conditioning Module pump is not running. Wait two minutes after pump has shut off for the low-pressure system to bleed off pressure.

After the repair is complete, bleed the fuel system.

High Pressure Pump Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not work on the fuel system until the pressure has been released and the engine has cooled. Fuel in the high-pressure fuel system is hot and under very high pressure. High-pressure fuel may cause cuts and contact with hot fuel may cause burns. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .

Remove the fuel rail supply tube. For additional information, refer to Fuel Rail Supply Tube in this section.

Remove the vacuum pump. For additional information, refer to Section 206-07 .

Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and the Clutch Housing Gauge, check the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear backlash. For additional information, refer to Specifications in this section.

NOTE: The crankshaft gear contains a single timing mark. The camshaft drive gear contains a single timing mark and a double timing mark. The high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear contains a double timing mark.

The engine is timed correctly when the single mark on the crankshaft drive gear is aligned with the double mark on the camshaft drive gear, and the single mark on the camshaft drive gear is aligned with the double mark on the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear. Additionally, the keyway on the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear must be in the 12 o'clock position.

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, as viewed from the front, until the single mark on the camshaft drive gear and the double mark on the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear are aligned.

Remove the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear nut.

Using the Universal Puller or equivalent, remove the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear.

Remove the 2 fuel rail supply tube bracket bolts and the fuel rail supply tube bracket from the rear of the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Disconnect the volume control valve electrical connector from the top of the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Remove the 3 high-pressure fuel injection pump spacers.

NOTICE: Do not pry against the mating surface of the high-pressure fuel injection pump or damage to the high-pressure fuel injection pump may occur.

Slide the high-pressure fuel injection pump off the mounting studs and remove the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel injection pump mounting O-ring.

Installation

Install a new high-pressure fuel injection pump mounting O-ring.

Lubricate the high-pressure fuel injection pump mounting O-ring with clean engine oil.

Slide the high-pressure fuel injection pump onto the mounting studs, and install the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Install the 3 high-pressure fuel injection pump spacers.

Tighten to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).

Connect the volume control valve electrical connector at the top of the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Install the fuel rail supply tube bracket and the 2 fuel rail supply tube bracket bolts to the rear of the high-pressure fuel injection pump.

Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

Install the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear.

Make sure the single mark on the camshaft drive gear is aligned with the double mark on the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear.

Install the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive gear nut.

Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

Install the vacuum pump. For additional information, refer to Section 206-07 .

Install the fuel rail supply tube. For additional information, refer to Fuel Rail Supply Tube in this section.

NOTE: This step is required only when a new fuel injection pump is being installed.

After the new fuel injection pump is installed, using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the following:

Reset/clear the specified function for the fuel system - high pressure side.

Clear the continuous PCM DTCs and reset the emissions monitors information in the PCM.

Refer to Section 2 of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.

Yes, I already upgraded the stock turbo to a Streetmax R, but I need more fuel to really use up all the potential the streetmax has. I did not want to do dual fuel pumps because then I would need to upgrade my SCT tuner to a mini max and change tune. Which really meant spend another 2K.

So Midwest Diesel came up with a stroker CP4 fuel pump which will top out the turbo.

What do you do if your gear doesn't have the two bolt holes in it to fit the puller on like in pictures I see google.

The side of the gear is too close to the housing to get a two or three finger puller on it.
How do you get it off?

I was able to gently pry the pump out of the gear from the back side of the housing. So, I got the pump out.
