Why ? There is a lift pump on the engine to handle the fuel supply. It is set to provide the proper pressure for the fuel to the injection pump. I would imagine the gasoline pump is a different pressure/volume.
It would work had it been the 7 psi version of Throttle body style injection. I forgot that the pressures were so high, a pressure regulator would also have to be added.
now if you recall in 80's with some gassers like the 460 i think in 84 they used a low pressure electric fuel pump in the tank and the engine was still carbed. this is the pump i was thinking about, i was just curious if the diesel will deteriate anything in the pump or will it give me good cheap service, cause i have like 3 of these pumps? thanks for all the input by the way!
it would be easier to jst add one outside the tank, that way when it should fail, it's easier to get out, and you don't have to get into the tank to install/remove it.The rear tank started leaking on my dad's so the electric pump got put in place of the switch. He got tired of replacing the mechanical pump, also had troubles with the lines draining back, so he installed the electric, no more problems.
I wouldn't try it because if it fails, it will as they almost all seem to, go when the tank is almost full. The reason there is no problem with the lines draining with an electric pump is because they have a check valve. You can buy check valves and install them inline by the way.
My dad is too lazy to do anything that isn't cobbled... The mechaniical pump would have lasted fine if he would just take care of his rig, there has been times the fuel lines had holes in them, and that solved the problem, until the leaks are fixed.
the reason i wanted electric, is cause i bought a new fuel filter water seperator and hav no room under the hood for it and do not want to run fuel lines from mech pump back to box then to motor, the only place i see for it is in my box next to my tank in a corner, cause i had a 38 gallon fuel tank made from scratch and installed it inside my box, it is real nice, it really dosent tak no more room than a foot of my box. and if i can run these fuel pumps they will be cheap and i can have a full tank and sit on my tank and tear off my acess plate and put in new pump, probbly alot faster than underneath tank. keep the info comming i love to learn new things, deffenitly others ideas. thanks
Well, here it goes. I used the inside box tank to refuel the front tank while driving. I connected a napa electric pump and an electric shut off (to keep the fuel from syphoning) mounted to a small channel plate. All of this was mounted to the inside of the running board on the driver's side of the truck. I also used an inline filter (replaceable) to filter the transferred fuel before it entered the stock tank. All of this was controllled from inside the cab by a switch. The fuel was transferred by drilling and tapping the filler neck inside the fuel door. Let me know and I will get the numbers for the parts. Dont know if I am smart enuf to get pics, but will definitely try for you if you wish. Bill
I replaced the fuel pump on my 89 7.3 because it was leaking fuel ito the crankcase. It was a real sombuck to get to. It was only 30 bucks for the pump and I also had to replace the fuel line to it.
