[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-01 AT 01:34 PM (EST)]Was wondering if its possible to remove the oil pan from a '90 F250 4x4 5.0L without pulling the engine? If it can be done, all tips would be appreciated. Thanks
I tried on my brothers 89 F250 5.8L and it was SUCH a pain. It can be done. Taking it off wasn't so much the problem, it was getting it back on. Here is a tip buy some gasket adhesive spray or use a light layer of rtv to hold the gasket in place. Let it dry so it doesn't move around. Take the engine mounts off so you can lift the engine in the bay. You can do it, it will just be tight, be patient, it will take a few skinned knuckles and some . Just remember if you are changing the oil pump to prime it. Also lift the engine till it hits the tranny tunnel. Hope this helps. His was a 4x4. It takes a little manuvering and you need to be patient but with enough fiddling it will come out.
I tried that on my '89 4x4 w/ 5.0L. Never did get the pan off. The trans kept getting in the way. At the time, I had the Mazda 5 speed. Maybe with an auto it would come off?
The main trick is to lift the front of the engine and the rear of the trans as high as both will go before hitting the underneath of the cab. Loosen the fan shroud, the power steering return line where it attaches to the crossmember, the air intake hoses, and whatever other hoses or cables that get tight as you lift up the engine/trans assembly. when you get it all the way up, the pan will JUST clear the bell housing with the right angle.
