they were definitely OEM gaskets. Ford Senior Diesel Tech did it, but I am not sure what the opinion on surface prep at the time was. I got heads from UCF Machine shop in PA - really nice - o-ringed and decked
Do you think you can post a good pic of the new heads o-ringed surface? When the time comes I think I'll be going for them too. Did you update to the new shorter pushrods yet? Are you replacing the lifters? Again, when the time comes I will be.
I did update the push rods. I did not replace the lifters. Here is a link to the shop I got the heads from. Sorry I did not get a chance to photograph my heads before they were put in. They looked great. The shop's website has good photos though. https://store.ucfmachineshop.com/

I've heard of them and haven't heard anything bad so I consider using them. Especially since they're only a couple hours away from me.
I don't know how many miles you have on the lifters but when it's apart that far it's getting new ones.
Not doing the lifters was a passive decision - I did not think of it and no one mentioned it. I only have 90k mi so I hope I am good for a while. But in general I agree.
I was very happy with the UCF product. Shipping was very fast and they are reasonable about the core policy. For example they did not mind if some exhaust manifold bolts were broken off in the head. I got my heads from them 3 days after I ordered.

I have almost 170 on mine and going strong, which adds to my reason for doing lifters.
Good to hear about UCF. It's getting harder and harder to trust any machine shop but when they specialize in these it's comforting. Sounds like it's all working out nicely.
I had a lifter fail in a 2004 Excursion at about 225k. It did a lot of damage. It destroyed my camshaft when it got stuck in the lifter gallery...necessitated a whole rebuild...disaster.
My understanding is that the rear lifters can not be replaced unless the transmission and engine are split so the high pressure oil tubes can be moved out of the way, is this correct?

Correct. To remove the lifters it requires the engine to be split from the trans. Then the rear cover comes off. Finally remove the branch tube to be able to remove the back sets of lifters.

This is what I thought also but the local guy that does a lot of these said he can sneek the rear lifters out without removing those branch tubes. IDK, still not sure I believe it. I wouldn't try it.

I have some very nice land for sale. Fine Print Disclosure Note. That is if you don't mind the gators and water
