I have a 1997 f250hd that shifts into 4th at about 25mph and lugs the motor down, then shift back to 3rd (maybe its 2nd and 3rd). It will keep shifting back and forth until you get up to speed, or if i'm in town i will put it in second.
no codes but the tranny fluid is dirty. I changed the filter the other day but didn't have time to flush it as it was getting dark and the line into the tranny was pretty rusted and starting to strip. Also there was no burnt smell.
I'm planning on taking it in to have it flushed this week. anyone have any other ideas?
Changing the fluid isn't bad, but it isn't going to fix this. Shifting too soon cannot be caused by old fluid. Something in the electronics is causing this. On the other hand, if the engine isn't making as much power as it should it will cause symptoms like you have.
Looking through my service manual after work this morning, I found that if the 4X4 low switch is failed closed or if the 4X4 low indicator light is blown it will shift according to the 4X4 low shift schedule regardless of transfer case position.
From everything I have found the last couple days, this is the closest to what it is doing. I think that it is shifting to soon, lugging the motor, then downshifting again and keeps repeating because the pcm thinks it's in 4 low.
I should be able to check into it on my days off this week. I will post back when I find anything
