Recently, and for no appearant reason, the shift points have changed on my E4OD transmission. The truck: '97 HD F250, 4x4, 460 w/ 58K miles, and well maintained, and tranny has been serviced, fluid clean and full.
Suddenly the shift points have changed to 3500 - 4000 RPM for all gears, and shifts HARD! (yeah, finally the damn thing shifts hard, only when it is having troube...) It well not shift by itself until these RPM's are reached. The speedo and all other guages work fine, no blown fuses either. Also, I notice that when I let off the accelerator at any speed the truck coasts like it is in neutral.
I'm assuming something electrical, a switch, or???...
This may sound too simple, but have you checked the fluid level? This happend to me. I didn't realize that I had a leak. A small leak over time can lower the level enough to cause these symptoms.
Drive your truck about 10 miles to get everyting warmed up. Stop on a level surface. Before checking the level, shift the transmission between reverse, drive, and back to park. With the truck idling and parking brake set, check the transmission fluid level. It should be within the "hashed lines" on the dip stick.
Have you changed the fluid and filter lately? Cruddy fluid or a clogged passage could cause such problems.
I'm not too familiar with this exact transmission, however other contributors can be something like a problem with a throttle position sensor (transmission doesn't know how shallow or deep you're into the throttle). Check to see if any wires or lines are unplugged.
Find a reputable shop for diagnosis, not one that just wants to tear your trasmission out and charge you $2000. If in doubt, take it to several places. If they all say the same thing then that could be the problem.
Well, Got it fixed. Turned out to be a bad Throttle Position Sensor. Replaced it, no more trouble!
It is amazing to see what one bad switch/sensor can do to a computer controlled vehicle. The scanner found several errors: Bad EGR, TPS, Torque converter slipage, etc.
Replaced the switch and scanned again - no error codes.
Hopefully this info. will help someone else. Thanks for the replies.
that may help me also... my e4od trans slips into neutral above fifty mph, leading me to believe that its an od problem. tried pulling codes myself and the best i got so far is a 332, which is egr and probably not related, and a 452 which is the vehicle speed sensor/psom. I need to try to pull codes again and see if I can get a better reading (I have trouble counting the flashes properly i guess)
