Hi All, I have a 2004 6.0 F350 4WD dually. Today I switched it into 4wd to get out of some sand. It went into 4wd no problem and I climbed out of the sand no problem. When I switched it back to 2wd the 4x4 light stayed lit and the truck would not come out of 4wd no matter what I tried. I did the backwards thing, I turned it off and back on I made sure the hubs were in auto but it still stays in 4wd. Any suggestions?
I had a similar problem with my '99 F250. It turned out to be a failed shift motor for the transfer case. I was able to remove the motor and manually shift back to 2wd. I believe I used an adjustable wrench on the exposed shaft.
It could also be a relay, there are two relays on the drivers side of the engine compartment, one is for shifting into 4wd and the other is for shifting from 4wd back to 2wd.
An easy way to test is to swap the two relays and see if it will shift back to 2wd. If it does then you just need to replace the bad relay.
Ok I pulled the relays and the 4x4 dropped out. I then put them in and now the 4x4 doesn't go back in. I tried different combinations thinking I messed up the relays but it doesn't have and effect on the 4x4 shift motor pulling in or out. Is there a way to troubleshoot the motor?
PS I checked both relays for operation and only one clicked when I put 12V across the coil terminals. I then opened up the relay and it is rusted. I ordered a new one through Amazon for $9 including shipping. Hopefully this will solve my problems.
