My Dad's 2000 Expy is having big 4WD problems. The transfer case will not come out of 4WD, but it will shift in and out of 4Lo. Any ideas? Is it possible that since it has the A4WD, could there be a sensor, the one that tells it it needs to be in 4WD, bad so that it is always telling the transfer case to be in 4WD?
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 30 MIN OR MORE TO RESET THE COMPUTERS, AND IF THAT DOESNT WORK IT MIGHT BE THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR. IT IS LIKE $50 FROM WWW.ROCKAUTO.COM.
I'll have to try disconnecting the battery when I go home in a week. If that doesn't work, is there anything else I could check? I'm not sure if it is a motor problem, since it does shift into 4Lo.
I have a similar issue. I have a 98 Navigator and I remember shifting it to 4wd lo only once, and having difficulty getting back out of 4wd lo. Somehow I did though by switching back and forth between 2wd 4wd etc, backing up while in 4wd lo like in the old days etc etc. I can't remember but somehow it finally went back to 2wd.
Well my wife just shifted it to 4wd lo by accident and the same thing happened only this time I cannot get it back out of 4wd for the life of me. I bought the Nav from a buddy and have no manual. Is there some trick to getting it out of 4wd lo that I don't know? Thanks.

Disconnecting the battery did the trick for me. 30 min. off and I was cruising again. Also I read in this forum, that it takes a while (30 sec) to shift with the truck in neutral and your foot on the brake. I don't think I was waiting long enough.
Well I finally got a chance to look at the truck again. I pulled the battery cable and let it sit for 30 min, and then tried the 4WD. Nothing changed, it is still stuck in 4WD. Any more ideas? Just to make sure I have this right, with the truck in A4WD, you should be able to spin the front output shaft on the transfer case by hand? (Note: the front driveshaft is disconnected)
I had the EXACT same problem on my 98 and took it to Ford. Here's what you need to do. Disconnect your battery for a couple of minutes to reset your computer. After you reconnect it, try shifting to 4Hi and 4Lo.
If it shifts, it's not your dash switch, vaccum lines, GEM, or fuse/relays. It will be your shift motor on the transfer case which is $300-$400 from Ford(labor not included). Probably much cheaper from a third party parts house. This is a part you can install yourself if you were inclined.
If it doesn't shift..... Hmmm. Then check vaccum lines and fuse/relays. A dash switch from Ford is $20 and takes about 5 minutes to install.
