I have an 02 with a 7.3 and I recently replaced the stock air cleaner and airbox with a complete unit from K & N. I like the responsiveness but when she warms up and I am accelerating, she makes a noise after she shifts...like she is exhaling loudly! Is that normal?
Thanks!
Not to burst your bubble, but K&N filters are well known to ruin your turbo. They do allow dirt past them and straight to your turbo. The recommendation is to immediately remove it.
Everything I read about the K & N issues was referring to the "drop in" filter that sits in the stock airbox, not the one that I installed...did I get that wrong and blow $200?
thanks
K&N's are garbage, nobody in the professional world runs them on a damn thing. Unfortunately, yes you blew a couple hundred bucks. Ford AIS would've been a much better choice...
The noise you're hearing is normal, it's just the turbo and wastegate along with air surge. Happens stock as well, but it's muffled by the stock intake setup and box.
Well I have been running them for the last 25 years with no issues. Services properly they are a great filter. I have had mine complete kit in my X since it's had 20k miles, it now has 93k. Never a problem. And I use the drop in replacements in my other cars. Also never had a problem.
The biggest issues are from people that over oil them.
Turbo applications will pull more air and de-oil the filter over time, even if properly serviced. That in turn coats the compressor wheel, which makes dust and such stick since the filter is down on oil for filtration. Since the OP runs a 7.3, it's more of an issue than your gasser
Exactly...even my AFE would turn almost back to white after I cleaned and oiled it up, with just a few open throttle runs. When I saw that, I promptly ordered up the AIS to replace it.
It is rare in any vehicle for airflow to be the limiting factor in power. It is usually fuel supply. The engineers design the systems this way for a reason.
If you want to change the air system go for the AIS. It is very reasonably priced and designed by engineers who know what they are doing. Personally I don't think it will actually allow more power but it does make changing the battery easier and you can change the headlight bulb without removing the battery in addition to that it was designed for high dirt conditions and so provides better than stock filtering without impeding airflow.
I removed the K&N filter I installed on my V10 after a trip to the beach where sand went through it and to the MAF. Imagine how much made it to the internals of the engine.

Nah, that's the cone fiter. The bad reports are for the drop in filter like you posted.
Oiled filters need more maintenance and you have to be careful of over-oiling.
I have the 6637 on my F250, the AFE Stage 2 oiled filter on my Ex, and the AFE Big Boost oiled filter on my daughters F250.
I've had the AFE on the Ex for over 10 years and when I replaced the OEM turbo a few years back (upgraded to the 38R) it was still in prestine condition. My 38R is also doing well as I check that at least once a year, but more like 3 or 4 times a year just because I'm wrenching on something under the hood. The 38R on my daughters F250 has been doing fine too, for over 7 years.
That K&N cone filter aint the best, but with proper maintenance, you'll be fine.
